How to Properly Store a Craft Beer
Craft beer is a living and delicate product that deserves attention in storage to maintain its organoleptic characteristics intact. Here are the fundamental principles to best preserve the quality of your premium beers.
Ideal temperature Craft beer should be stored at a constant temperature between 10°C and 15°C. Temperature variations are the main enemy: avoid moving bottles from cold to warm environments and vice versa. For high-alcohol or aged beers, a cool cellar is the ideal environment.
Protection from light Light, especially direct sunlight and intense artificial light, can degrade hop compounds causing the so-called "lightstruck" defect which gives the beer an unpleasant taste. Always store bottles in the dark or in dimly lit environments. Dark bottles (amber or brown) already offer natural protection.
Bottle position Unlike wine, beer should be stored in vertical position. This minimizes the contact of the liquid with the cap, reduces oxidation, and allows natural sediments to settle at the bottom without clouding the beer.
Storage of cans Cans offer superior protection compared to bottles: they are completely opaque (total protection from light), airtight (no oxidation), and more resistant to temperature fluctuations. They can be stored both vertically and horizontally without problems. Cans are ideal for hoppy beers that need to maintain the freshness of their aromas. The rule of constant temperature and absence of temperature fluctuations also applies to cans. An additional advantage: they are lighter, unbreakable, and more sustainable for transport.
Humidity and environment An environment with moderate humidity (50-70%) is ideal to preserve the integrity of crown caps and labels. Cans are not affected by humidity and perfectly maintain their integrity in any condition.
Consumption times Fresh and hoppy beers (IPA, Pale Ale) should be consumed within 3-6 months of production to best appreciate their aromas, both in bottles and cans. More structured beers (Imperial Stout, Barley Wine, Belgian Strong Ale) can improve with aging of 1-3 years if properly stored in bottles.
What to avoid
- Frequent temperature fluctuations
- Direct exposure to sunlight (especially for bottles)
- Refrigeration for prolonged periods (if not necessary)
- Horizontal position for bottles
- Environments with strong odors that could penetrate through the bottle cap
By following these simple tips, you can enjoy your craft beer in optimal conditions, appreciating all the work and passion the brewmaster has dedicated to its creation.
