Morning Routine: a guide to Session IPA

Session IPA is a low-alcohol version of India Pale Ale that maintains the aromatic character and hop intensity typical of IPA. The goal: intense fragrances and flavors (citrus, tropical fruit, resin) in an easier-to-drink beer.

Brief history of the "session beer"

The concept was born in the United Kingdom: a "session" is an extended drinking period where you want to stay clear-headed and social. With the craft scene explosion, the idea was applied to IPAs: the aromatic intensity of IPAs with the easy-drinking approach of session beers.

Basic recipe for a Session IPA (20 L)

  • Target ABV: 3,5–4,8%.
  • Malts: light base (pilsner or pale malt), 5–10% oats or light caramel for a soft body.
  • Hops: late additions and abundant dry hopping (30–50 g). IBU: 20–35.
  • Yeast: clean and neutral strains to highlight the hops.
  • Fermentation: 18–20°C to preserve clean aromas.

Fuller's vs Fourpure: two interpretations compared

  • Fuller's (English school): balances malty crispness and hops without overpowering the body. Drinkability and balance first.
  • Fourpure (modern and hop-forward): emphasizes fresh and fruity aromas with contemporary hops, while maintaining a session ABV.
