9 Best Breweries and Beer Halls in Prague: From Monastic Beer to Karlín’s Craft Newcomers

Prague is, without exaggeration, the world capital of beer: it has been produced here for more than five centuries, and in recent years an authentic craft boom has joined the classic lagers. This guide is for those who want more than a supermarket Pilsner — real, unfiltered beer, from monastic recipes behind the castle walls to experimental fermentations in industrial Karlín.

The route works both for those with only one free evening and for anyone ready to dedicate an entire day to a true beer tour. And if after Prague you feel like exploring what is happening in Italy’s craft scene, discover Maltese craft beers — Italian Grape Ale, Italian Pilsners, and much more.

1. Klášterní pivovar Strahov — Prague 1

Address: Strahovské nádvoří 301, Praha 1 | Hours: 10:00–22:00

A brewery founded four centuries ago inside Strahov Monastery, in the Hradčany district. Created to help the monks endure the hardships of fasting, it is now a place steeped in tradition and unmistakable character. Alongside classic Czech styles, it offers bolder craft-inspired options. Not to be missed: beer soup and beer ice cream.

2. U Fleků — Prague 1

Address: Křemencova 11, 110 00, Staré Město, Praha 1

The only brewery in Central Europe to have produced beer continuously for more than 500 years. Spread across eight halls and a courtyard, it can host more than 1,200 guests. Its signature beer is Flekovský 13°, a characterful dark lager. It is touristy and noisy, but impossible to skip: it is part of the city’s history.

3. U Medvídků — Prague 1

Address: Na Perštýně 7, 100 01 Praha 1

The venue’s history dates back to 1466. Its real strength is the on-site microbrewery, which uses traditional methods to produce the world’s strongest beer: X BEER 33. Alongside this extreme beer, you will find classics such as the semi-dark Oldgott and a lager aged in a barrel.

4. Lokál Dlouhááá — Staré Město, Prague 1

Address: Dlouhá 33, 110 00 Praha 1

The first and largest of the Ambiente group’s venues: 69.78 metres of dining room, 12 serving tanks, and up to 1,300 guests per day. It serves homestyle Czech cuisine and Pilsner Urquell directly from the tank, chilled to perfection. Almost always full: it is best to arrive early or make a reservation.

5. Dva Kohouti — Karlín, Prague 8

Address: Sokolovská 81/55, 186 00 Praha 8

A modern brewery with an adjoining bar in the Karlín district. Lokal Lager is brewed in the morning in the "U Města Hamburku" building and is already flowing from the bar taps in the afternoon. Guests can watch the entire brewing process in a former mechanical workshop. The flagship product is a 12° Pilsner-style lager with seasonal releases. In summer, the courtyard comes alive with DJ sets.

6. Břevnovský klášterní pivovar sv. Vojtěcha — Prague 6

A brewery inside Břevnov Monastery, one of the oldest in the Czech Republic. Ideal for a peaceful visit away from the city centre. You can take a short brewery tour, taste the Benedict and Imperial ranges, and have dinner at the reasonably priced restaurant. The monastic courtyard is worth the short trip outside the centre.

7. The Beer Spot — Malá Strana, Prague 5

Address: Plaská 5, Malá Strana, Praha 5 | Hours: Mon–Fri 11:30–23:30, Sat 14:00–23:30

A craft gastropub with the neighbourhood’s largest beer garden, at the foot of Petřín Hill. It specialises in independent Czech microbreweries: 10 rotating taps and more than 100 bottled beers. The ideal place to compare several small producers in a single evening.

8. Craft House Prague — Nové Město, Prague 1

Address: Navrátilova 1421/11, 110 00 Nové Město

No frills, just serious beer: 27 taps plus a wide selection of cans and bottles — all Czech, featuring breweries such as Sibeeria and Raven. It also operates as a bottle shop, so you can take your favourite cans home.

9. U Kunštátů — Staré Město, Prague 1
