Would you like a 0 alcohol and 100% taste drink… that tastes like beer and is perfect at the end of a long bike ride or a trail running race? The answer is non-alcoholic beer!
Beer and sports is a winning combination, known for decades: it has always been said that a good mug of fresh beer helps replenish the minerals lost during sports performance.
But what about the alcohol? If the point is to rehydrate, we know well that consuming alcoholic drinks is not ideal. But if the beer is non-alcoholic, then we’ve hit the jackpot: all the goodness of your favorite blonde, red, or dark beer, in long alcohol-free sips.
Electrolyte drink, for whom? Better a non-alcoholic beer!
When it comes to hydration after physical activity, non-alcoholic beer emerges as an interesting alternative to classic electrolyte drinks. First of all, let’s bust a common myth: beer is not directly responsible for that "bloated belly" often attributed to it, nor is it that high in calories.
Recent nutritional tables from CREA (Council for Agricultural Research and Economics) show that light beer, for example, with about 34kcal per 100g, has fewer calories than many other drinks, including sugary sodas or even some fruit juices. Moreover, non-alcoholic beer versions, thanks to innovative production processes, offer the pleasure of the usual taste without the caloric contribution of alcohol, coming in at around just 30kcal per 100g.
But what makes non-alcoholic beer a truly interesting option is its nutritional profile. In addition to carbohydrates, useful for replenishing energy after physical activity, it contains some proteins, B vitamins (such as folic acid), and essential minerals like potassium and magnesium, which support proper muscle function. The effectiveness of this drink is supported by scientific studies. Research from the University of Granada has shown that non-alcoholic beer, thanks to its composition, can rehydrate the body after sports… even better than water! It’s a perfect solution for those who want to combine hydration, energy recovery, and mineral replenishment naturally and, last but not least, deliciously.
Increase in non-alcoholic beer consumption, among Gen Z and health trends
The boom in non-alcoholic beer is not just a trend but represents a true revolution in the beverage market. The latest IWSR Drinks Market Analysis report found that the non-alcoholic and low-alcohol beverage sector reached 11 billion dollars in 2022, with a staggering 37.5% growth compared to 2018.
This growth is expected to continue, with an annual growth rate of 7% forecast until 2026. Generation Z is one of the main drivers of this change: about 23% of young people born after 2000 often prefer non-alcoholic drinks, a trend reflecting growing attention to health and a balanced, sporty lifestyle.
The reasons behind this change are varied. 50% of consumers are driven by curiosity for new flavors, while 31% do so to maintain a healthier diet. Additionally, 35% of people avoid alcohol for specific reasons, such as religion or intolerances. Non-alcoholic beer fits perfectly into this trend, offering the pleasure of a social and tasty drink without the negative effects of alcohol, becoming a conscious wellness choice aligned with new cultural and market trends.
Not convinced yet? Going beyond the beer and sports connection, let’s return to the classic beer and socializing: consider that in the 2024 edition of Oktoberfest, the world’s most famous beer festival, the beer selection for sale also includes a non-alcoholic beer. And that’s all from Munich!
