The brewery Speakeasy Ales and Lager was founded in San Francisco in 1997 by Forest Gray, then a homebrewer, together with partners Steve Bruce and Eric Chang. Since 2012, the brewmaster role has been held by Kushal Hall, also a former homebrewer like Gray. In 2015, the brewery expanded production with a new brewhouse and launched its first canned beer.
Speakeasy’s labels evoke the era of American Prohibition: 1930s atmospheres, mafia crimes, organized crime. Drinking a Speakeasy is like entering a clandestine bar where the beer is good, jazz plays softly, and no one asks questions.
