What is a Märzen?
The Märzen is a classic German beer style, historically brewed in March ("März" in German) and stored for summer and autumn celebrations, especially Oktoberfest. It is a lager: fermented with lager yeasts and matured at low temperatures for an extended period. The result is a medium-bodied beer with biscuity notes, bread crust aromas, and a clean, slightly sweet finish.
Märzen vs Helles: the differences
- Color and malt: Märzen is more amber/copper with more pronounced bread and caramel notes; Helles is paler and golden with a more delicate malt
- Body: Märzen has a medium body and fuller mouthfeel; Helles is lighter and highly drinkable
- Occasion: Märzen is the beer of Oktoberfest; Helles is the everyday Bavarian beer
Food pairings
- Roasted and braised meats (beef, pork)
- Festive foods: pork knuckle, sausages, sauerkraut
- Semi-aged and pressed cheeses
- Dishes with honey or salted caramel to enhance the malt’s sweet notes
- Artisanal snacks and dried meat strips for an autumn aperitif
How to serve a Märzen
- Temperature: 8–12 °C — cool but not icy to appreciate the malt aromas
- Glassware: beer mug or Willi Becher — EDIT Willi Becher Glasses 40cl on Maltese
- Tasting: savor slowly, notice the malt before focusing on bitterness and cleanliness
